Sorority Leadership is a Valuable Skill Learned in College
Making the Jump to Join a Sorority
“From the outside looking in, you can never understand it. From the inside looking out, you can never explain it.” I always thought that this quote was cliché, but now I do not think that there could be a better way to explain exactly how I feel about my sorority. I would like to explain how this sorority really shaped me and others into the person that we are today, which is a group of women who are motivated and ready to take on the world around them once they graduate. Sorority leadership is a valuable college skill that lends itself to outlast the college years. I would have never seen myself as a leader when I was a freshman, but now I am the fully functional Vice President of Phi Sigma Sigma.
What a Sorority Can Bring
Sororities are a fantastic way to make new friends, meet new people, and get your footing in the college environment. I believe that now as a senior, this organization has given me the confidence I need and the support system to back me up to become who I need to become in order to succeed. My sister Jackie Morgan can also talk about sorority leadership. “When I joined this sorority I never saw myself as a leader and never planned on holding any positions. Three years later I am now the upcoming Vice President and now strive to be the best leader that I can be.” As Jackie will soon be taking my spot as the future Vice President, I will help her grow in this transition period from now until January when my term ends.
Growing Into Better Leaders
My term with sorority leadership in Phi Sigma Sigma has not come without challenges. I believe that this is what helps a leader grow. One is encouraged to make mistakes, and this challenge will continuously help to encourage growth in the long run. As someone in sorority leadership gains experience, the mistakes will lessen in number and inspiration will increase instead. I believe that by being in a sorority, the girls will always have your back as you mess up, and will never give you the chance to even hit rock bottom. An edge is then given to you as opposed to any other club on campus, as I fiercely believe that girls bound by the same beliefs and values are more loyal, more dependable and more supportive to help each other grow. This is also the core that drives sorority leadership.
Supporting One Another
One of the main reasons that I joined my sorority was to find sisterhood. My family was always close, and being the first to move away was not easy. While I joined looking for friends, I emerged as a better woman. Sister Alyssa Moretti can attest to the same. “Since joining my sorority, I have changed in every aspect. I never thought I would take the opportunities of running for a position. But I finally went for it and ran. In the past two years I’ve become sisterhood chairmen and treasurer. My sorority has shaped me into a better person”. Alyssa has become one of my closest friends throughout the years. I am proud to be her roommate, her friend, and her sister. The bonds of our sisterhood are everlasting, and we are better women to show for it.
Becoming A Family
I am so proud to be a part of a sisterhood that encourages each other to be better women. We do not get along with each other all the time, but I have trust in my sisters to guide me. So to return to the quote, from the outside looking in, you can never understand it. From the inside looking out, you can never explain it. I may not have been able to accurately portray what exactly happens within the walls of our pyramid. What I can say is that I have most definitely become a better leader during my time as a sister of Phi Sigma Sigma.
