An editor coordinates the publication of content for print (books, magazines, periodicals, newspapers, etc.) and digital media (websites, ebooks, white papers etc). They may also work on the content of radio and television programming.
As part of this work, an editor plans what content will appear and how it will be organized in the publication, develops content ideas, coordinates the work of authors and creatives, reads, reviews, and proofreads manuscript drafts, and verifies factual information.
While working primarily with the written content, editors may also plan the layout of visual elements such as photographs, illustrations, and ads, alongside the text content.
An editor must ensure that all content follows the editorial policies and the style guide used by their publication. Depending on the size of the publication, an editor may do the bulk of this work alone, or may delegate some duties to assistant editors responsible for particular content areas.
A good editor needs to have exceptional writing skills, the ability to manage teams and projects, high attention to detail, and the ability to meet tight deadlines.
